Weather balloon, 19th-century artwork. Tethered balloon that has been turned into an electric meteorological recorder. This one carries an anemometer, used to record data on wind speed and direction. Weather balloons such as these began to be used regularly in the 1890s, especially in France and the USA. Artwork from the 19th volume (first period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
