German military airship, 19th-century artwork based on a photograph. There were many attempts during the 19th century to design and build balloons or airships that were capable of powered flight. Several airship designs were being tested in Germany in the 1890s. This elongated design with a basket and additional balloon at the rear, was tested at Kiel. The German military would later use the elongated Zeppelin airship design during the First World War. Artwork from the 20th volume (second period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
