Milky Way over Alamut, Iran. The arc of the Milky Way (our galaxy seen from the inside) and a meteor streak (upper right) are seen above the mountain fortress of Alamut, at an altitude of 2100 metres in the Alborz Mountains of Iran. Alamut (the Eagle's Nest) was a stronghold of the Assassins, a sect of Nizari Ismailis (a branch of Shia Islam), from the 11th to 13th centuries. The fortress here was destroyed in 1256 by invading Mongols.
