Star trails over an alpine church. Time-exposure image of star trails in the night sky above Innsbruck, Austria (city lights at left). This hour-long exposure was obtained next to an old wooden church on the slopes of the Alps near the city. Star trails are formed by the apparent motion of the stars in the sky as the Earth rotates on its axis. Here, in the northern hemisphere, the star trails form concentric circles around the north celestial pole.
