Louvre museum courtyard, Paris, France. The Louvre is a former palace that housed the French Royal family in the 18th century. It is now an art museum and gallery, and is the largest museum in the world. This is the Napoleon Courtyard, redesigned in 1989 by American architect I. M. Pei. Additions during the redesign included this equestrian statue of Louis XIV, a copy of a marble original held at Versailles, and pyramids of glass and steel. The main pyramid (right) rises 21 metres above the ground, and provides access to underground art galleries.
