Beryllium. Sample of the alkaline earth metal Beryllium (Be). Beryllium is a grey metallic element that is extracted from the mineral beryl (Beryllium aluminosilicate). Beryllium-copper alloys are used in nuclear reactors as reflectors and moderators. Beryllium and its compounds are toxic and can cause serious lung diseases and dermatitis in humans.
