Loperamide diarrhoea drug crystal, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This drug is used to treat acute diarrhoea and to control some forms of chronic diarrhoea. It is an opioid agonist that reduces the muscular contractions of the intestine (peristalsis). This allows for more water to be absorbed from the stool slows the emptying of the gut.
