Animation showing the relative sizes of the Earth and Mercury, the smallest planet in the Solar System. Earth has a diameter of some 12,742 kilometres, compared to Mercury's 4880 km. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, orbiting in a highly elliptical orbit that takes it as close as 46 million kilometres and as far away as just uner 70 million.
