Sulphate ion test. The test will determine if sulphate ions are present in solution. The type of reaction used is a precipitation reaction. A solution containing sulphate is acidified using dilute hydrochloric acid. Barium chloride solution is then added. If sulphate ions are present, a white precipitate of barium sulphate is formed.
