Hammer toe. Deformity of the second toe in an adult, caused by fixed flexion of the first joint. Hammer toe most commonly affects the second toe which, as here, often develops a corn over the deformity. A corn (or clavus) is a painful growth of hard horny skin that can form due to rubbing of the hammer toe deformity against ill-fitting shoes. Hammer toe may itself cause considerable pain. Treatment is by strapping or corrective footwear, or surgery at the affected joint.
