Infected burn on middle finger. Close up of the middle finger of a patient who has sustained a first degree burn to the middle joint of the middle finger. There is a central golden crust in the pinkish area of infected skin which is shiny and swollen. The patient's nail has a white line of discolouration across its centre which indicates poor blood supply to the nail at that time of growth. This deformity probably dates to the injury. Secondary infection occurs because the skin is no longer able to protect the site from invasion by bacteria. Treatment is with wound hygiene and an antibacterial dressing.
