Making hydrogen gas. Zinc is reacting with hydrochloric acid in the test tube on the left to form pure hydrogen gas, which is collected in the test tube on the right. This test tube has been filled with water and inverted. As it fills with hydrogen gas, the water is displaced. The reaction is: Zn + 2HCl -> H2 + ZnCl2.
