Galaxies NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, visible-light image. Known as the Eyes Galaxies, these two galaxies are part of the Virgo Cluster and are around 50 million lights years from Earth in the constellation of Virgo. The data for this image was obtained using the FORS2 (focal reducer and low dispersion spectrograph) instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). The VLT is an array of telescopes where the data is combined using interferometry to produce high-resolution images. The VLT is located at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. NGC 4438 is at upper left, and NGC 4435 is at lower right. Image published in August 2011.
