Lung bronchus. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue showing a bronchus (airway, white space from upper left to lower right). Lining the inside of the bronchus is folded ciliated epithelium (dark purple) that contains mucus-secreting goblet cells. Surrounding the bronchus is a layer of smooth muscle (pink with purple lines) and a layer of hyaline cartilage (pink with white spaces along lower right and upper left). At upper right are alveoli; the air sacs where gaseous exchange occurs.
