Smear test. Practice nurses performing a smear test on a patient. A smear test takes a sample of cells from a patient's cervix (neck of the womb), which are sent to a laboratory for examination. Abnormal cells may indicate cervical disease or cancer. Cervical cancer is usually curable when detected early.
