Girl aged 9 in a Magnetoencephalograph (MEG) scanner. She is accompanied in the scanner room by her father, as the scan is non-invasive and does not emit radiation. The girl is wearing a cap fitted with a network of electrodes for use in the electroencephalography (EEG) studies carried put concurrently with the MEG scan. The scanner detects the extremely small magnetic fields generated by neural activity in different parts of the brain. The resulting data is used with other techniques to investigate psychiatric and neurological disorders such as ADHD, epilepsy and autism also age-related memory and cognitive syndromes such as Alzheimer's and dementia.
