Hydroxide precipitates. Two test tubes containing, from the left, copper (II) and iron (II). Both test tubes have had ammonia added to them. This has caused the hydroxides of the metals to precipitate out of the solutions as solids. In the test tube containing copper (II), as well as the cloudy pale blue precipitate, there has also been the formation of copper (II) ion ammonia complex (dark blue). Addition of ammonia is used as a test for positive metal (III) ions in solution.
