Fish head gill region. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the head of a fish in the region of the gills and operculum (gill covers). The gills are the feathery structures at lower right and lower left. At centre is the pharyngeal (throat) cavity, with six bony gill arches around it (white, rounded in cross-section). The gill filaments on the gills extract oxygen from the water. Muscle blocks (ventral) are at bottom centre (solid dark blue-purple) with the aorta (main body artery, round) above them. At top is the brainstem (medulla oblongata) surrounded by the bony cranium. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
