AKT1 human enzyme molecule. Protein kinase enzymes modify other proteins by chemically adding phosphate groups to them (phosphorylation). AKT1 is a critical mediator of cell death (apoptosis) in neurons (nerve cells) through the phosphorylation and inactivation on the apoptotic machinery.
