Portable Skid Resistance Tester. This device is made to standard specifications for testing how slippery a road is, measured as 'skid resistance' and also known as the pendulum test value. The weighted pendulum is here held in its starting position at upper right. It is placed over the surface to be tested and adjusted to the appropriate level to allow the protruding element to make contact with the surface when the pendulum is released. The pendulum is slowed by this contact, rising to a level indicated by the marker at left. This marker is in its finishing position, here showing a measurement of 130 degrees.
