Caption

Cyanobacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cyanobacteria (formally known as blue-green algae, blue). Several spores (pink) are also seen. These are reproductive structures that allow dispersal and are also able to survive unfavourable conditions for extended periods of time. Cyanobacteria are photosynthesising bacteria that are found in most habitats where water is present. Magnification: x20,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
