Caption

Kidney glomerulus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the surface of a glomerulus. This structure is encased in podocyte cells that have branching processes (pedicles, orange) that interlock. Below the surface, blood flows through the coiled capillary (pink). The glomeruli filter waste products from the blood to form urine. Magnification: x800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
