Orion spacecraft. Animation of the separation, orbit and re-entry stages of a test flight of the Orion spacecraft. This manned spacecraft is being developed by NASA, the US space agency. It is designed to be launched using a Delta IV Heavy rocket. This animation shows Orion's crew module (right) separating from its thruster and service modules and its rocket's second stage (Delta Cryogenic Second Stage, DCSS) following its initial test flight in Earth orbit. This is followed by a view of Earth from a window in the orbiting spacecraft. The final stages of the sequence show the crew module protected behind its heat shield re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. The first Orion test flights are proposed for 2014. For different stages in an Orion test flight, see clips K003/2141-2144.
