Thermolysis of mercury oxide. Mercury oxide (HgO) being heated in a test tube by a bunsen burner. At temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius, mercury oxide thermolyses into mercury and oxygen. The equation is as follows: 2HgO -> 2Hg + O2. Mercury oxide is a highly poisonous chemical.
