Rotifer. Differential interference contrast micrograph of a Collotheca sp. Rotifer. These animals are related to roundworms. They are usually freshwater organisms though a few marine species are known. Collotheca secrete transparent mucous tubes into which they can retreat when disturbed. Magnification: x90 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
