Caption

Blepharisma protozoan. Differential interference contrast micrograph of a Blepharisma americana protozoan, showing food vacuoles (circles) containing red-stained yeast (red), which it was fed to show the process by which it ingests its food. These ciliate protozoa move by beating their cilia, hair-like extensions that cover their bodies. Magnification: x350 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
