Desmid (Micrasterias crux-melitensis). Desmids are attractive unicellular freshwater Green Algae that have a distinct basic symmetry consisting of two semi-cells with the nucleus situated in the narrow center. The green chloroplast enables photosynthesis. Most desmids require special water conditions, often nutrient poor, unpolluted water, especially acidic bogs and marshes. Phase contrast LM X25.
