Caption

Imipenem-cilastatin molecular model. One of the carbapenem family of antibiotics that represent a last resort in the treatment of resistant bacterial infections, sometimes called superbugs. However, bacteria possessing genes such as NDM-1 are able to produce an enzyme (background, upper right) which can hydrolyze these antibiotics and render them ineffective (left).
