Coscinodiscus is a planktonic marine Diatom. Note the yellow-brown plastids used for photosynthesis and the delicate texture of the siliceous cell wall. Diatoms are unicellular algae that have beautiful shells or tests that consist of two parts or valves that fit together somewhat like a pill box. Phase contrast LM X16.
