First Tsiolkovsky spaceship design. Drawing from the 1883 book 'Free Space' by Russian aviation and aerospace pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), in which he proposes a design for a spaceship. The diagram shows the occupants in weightlessness, gyroscopes for directional control, an airlock for accessing the outside (left) and a mass-ejection propulsion system (right). Tsiolkovsky laid many of the foundations of modern aerodynamics. He is best known for his visionary work on the problems of space travel, and he is considered one of the founding figures of rocketry and astronautics.
