Desert land reclamation project. Land-reclamation specialist carrying out sand-fixing work in the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan. The roots of the grid of plants will anchor the substrate and encourage the formation of soil and hence more plants. This is aimed at preventing or reversing the process of desertification, where an arid climate causes land to become denuded of vegetation, and the soil breaking down and drying out to form sand dunes. The Karakum Desert of Central Asia covers an area of some 350,000 square kilometres, covering over two-thirds of Turkmenistan. Photographed in 1990.
