Digestive system, computer artwork. At top is the oesophagus, which carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The food is stored and partially broken down in the stomach before moving on to the small intestine (centre) to be digested. Food residue passes from the small intestine to the large intestine (around outside) where excess water is absorbed. Faeces are stored in the rectum (lower centre) before being expelled through the anus (bottom centre). The small projection from the large intestine at lower left, is the appendix. To the left of the stomach is the gallbladder.
