Homo sp. skulls. At right is a Homo heidelbergensis skull (Broken Hill 1 skull, from Zambia). H. heidelbergensis lived between 600,000 and 250,000 years ago. At left is a Homo neanderthalensis skull (Gibraltar 1, from Forbes Quarry). H neanderthalensis lived between 230,000 and 29,000 years ago.
