Animation showing the building of an icosohedral virus capsid (protein coat). The capsid is made up of repeated individual units, three of which form a triangular trimer, which is then repeated twenty times to form the icosahedral shape. This animation shows the capsid structure of a panicum mosaic satellite virus (PMSV), one of the smallest icosahedral viruses. Protein structure PDB code: 1STM.
