Lily carpel. Light micrograph of a section through a lily (Lilium sp.) flower carpel, showing the three fused 'leaves' that make up the pistil. The edges of these curl inwards and bear the placentas, which in turn house the ovules (dark ovals). Each ovule contains an ovum, or female sex cell (not seen). Magnification: x11 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
