Chronic lupus erythematosus. Light micrograph of a section through skin tissue affected by chronic (discoid) cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease whereby the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. Resulting symptoms include inflammation, swelling, damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, heart and lungs. Magnification: x280 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
