Artefacts excavated at Troy. Troy by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890). Troy is famous as the site of a legendary war described by the Ancient Greek poet Homer in his work the Iliad. It was in 1871 that Schliemann discovered ruins at Hissarlik, in Turkey, that he attributed to Homeric Troy, though it is now thought that he discovered the remains of an earlier Troy. Schliemann's four excavations at Troy all date to the period from 1871 to 1890. This woodcut dates from around 1880.
