Neapolitan carriage. Neapolitan carriage drawn by two horses with a man riding on the rear platform, and a child sitting in a storage area. The Bay of Naples and its surrounding mountains (which include the volcano Vesuvius) are in the background. This Neapolitan carriage has two wheels mounted on a single axle, and is similar to vehicles such as the calesso, curricle, carrick, or chariot, all of which were horse-drawn vehicles with two wheels. They were all lightweight vehicles, used for fast travel and short to moderate distances. This woodcut dates from around 1871.
