Woolly mammoth. Mounted skeleton of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), a large elephant-like mammal that lived in northern latitudes of Europe, Asia and America. Specimens have been dated as far back as 150,000 years ago and as recently as 10,000 years ago, although one group survived until about 3700 years ago. More recent skeletons are preserved rather than fossilised due to being buried in permafrost. Photographed at the Orlov Palaeontological Museum in Moscow, Russia.
