A farm worker milking an elk at a research farm. The Eurasian elk, or moose, (Alces alces) has been studied as a possible farm animal in Russia for many decades. Early attempts at domestication were not successful, but since 1963 a farm at Sumarokovo has established a tame herd of around 30 animals. Although not yet commercially independent, the farm enables researchers to study the process of domestication of wild animals.
