Apollo-Soyuz Test project commanders. Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (born 1934, front) and US astronaut Thomas Stafford (born 1930) answering questions at the first ever press conference in space, during the Apollo-Soyuz Test project (ASTP). Leonov was commander of the Soviet Soyuz-19 mission, whilst Stafford was commander of the US Apollo 18 mission. The two spacecraft were launched as part of the ASTP, a joint project between the USA and the USSR, and successfully docked with each other in orbit on 17th July 1975. The programme was intended to test a jointly-designed international docking mechanism.
