Cosmonauts Leonov and Komarov at a party. Aleksei Leonov. Portrait of Aleksei Arkhipovich Leonov (b. 1934) with Vladimir Mikhailovich Komarov (1927-1967) at a New Year's Eve party. Leonov flew on the Voskhod 2 mission from 18-19th March 1965. During this flight, he became the first person to make a space walk. Leonov was also part of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test project and later became Air Force Major General. Komarov was a Colonel in the Soviet Air Force. He made his first space flight in 1964, when he served as the commander of Voskhod 1, the first spacecraft to carry a crew of three. He was killed on 24th April 1967 when Soyuz 1 crashed after its parachutes failed to deploy properly on re-entry. Photographed in Moscow, Russia.
