Nikolai Luzin (1883-1950). Russian-Soviet mathematician Nikolai Nikolaevich Luzin sitting at a desk. Luzin made major contributions to number theory, particularly by devising descriptive set theory. In 1936 he was criticised by the newspaper Pravda and accused of counter-revolutionary practices. Although Luzin was convicted of these trumped-up charges, he was never punished. He was formally acquitted posthumously in 2012.
