Ostankino Tower at night. The Ostankino Tower in Moscow was built in 1963-67 to broadcast radio and TV signals and stands 540 metres tall to the top of its spire, although its roof is at 385 metres. For nine years it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world, even today it is the tallest in Europe.
