Gorge on the Alcantara river, Sicily. This river flows through an old lava flow from the nearby volcano Mount Etna. As the water cooled the lava, it solidified into tall basalt columns, through which the river eroded steep-sided channels such as this one. The cross-sections of the old columns are seen on the rocks as a semi-regular pattern of tiling.
