Palau. North is at top. Satellite image showing the island nation of the Republic of Palau. Palau lies in the collection of islands in the western Pacific Ocean (blue) known as Micronesia. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands and is distinct from Melanesia to the south, and Polynesia to the east. Palau consists of eight principal islands and more than 250 smaller ones, lying roughly 500 miles southeast of the Philippines. The islands of Palau constitute part of the Caroline Islands chain.
