Human fertilisation. Computer artwork of the female reproductive system, showing fertilisation. An ovum (egg, round, yellow) is released (ovulation) by one of the ovaries (beige, centre left and right) and passes into the fallopian tube (upper right), where it is penetrated (fertilised) by a sperm (not shown) if one is present. The fertilised egg cell then divides into a zygote and continues to increase in cell number to form a blastocyst and then an embryo as it passes towards the uterus (centre). It enters the uterus and implants (upper centre) in the uterine lining where it will develop into a foetus. The vagina (lower centre) can also be seen.
