Heart-lung system, computer artwork. The heart (centre) is a hollow muscle that pumps blood around the body. Arteries, which carry oxygenated blood around the body, are red. Veins, which carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs, are blue. The large artery down centre left is the aorta. At upper centre is the trachea (tube, grey), branching above the heart into a bronchus that leads to each lung, splitting in turn into bronchioles (grey). The arteries and veins of the lungs run alongside each bronchiole. Also shown are the bones of the spine and rib-cage, with the spine at left.
