Buttock muscles. Computer artwork of a posterior view of the hips showing some of the muscles (red) of the buttocks. These are shown attached to the femurs (thigh bones) and the pelvis bones. The lower part of the spine is at upper centre, with the sacrum and coccyx at centre. At left the muscles from top to bottom are: the piriformis; the superior gemellus; the obturator internus; the inferior gemellus; and the quadratus femoris. These muscles, known as the lateral rotators, act to laterally rotate the thigh. They are shown in full at left, and partially sectioned at right.
