The lower part of the spine is at upper centre, with the sacrum and coccyx at centre. At left the muscles from top to bottom are: the piriformis; the superior gemellus; the obturator internus; the inferior gemellus; and the quadratus femoris. These muscles, known as the lateral rotators, act to laterally rotate the thigh. They are shown in full at left, and partially sectioned at right.
