Pyroxene autige. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of augite, an essential part of igneous rock, basalt and gabbro. It's also quite common in metamorphosed iron formations. It's named from the Greek for luster, apparently based on the appearance of its cleavage surface. This specimen is from West Bohemia Czech Republic. Horizontal object size: 26 mm.
